Laila-Majnu Ki Mazar: The Tomb of Eternal Love

Why is love such a universal thing? Why does love make people do crazy things?! No one can give perfect answers to such questions. The only thing that can be said is Love is an eternal feeling which is one reason probably why peace still do exist in the world. Could we have seen the wonder 'Taj Mahal' without such love? Or could we have so many stories that spiced up our lives?! The tales of Laila - Majnu is one among the famous eternal love stories across the world.

An Arabic poem from a poet called Nizami Ganjavi revolutionised the story of Laila - Majnu during the 11th Century. Some think it is just fictional. Whatever it is, their graves known as Laila-Majnu Ki Mazar are situated in Rajasthan's Anoopgarh.

Laila-Majnu Ki Mazar is a mausoleum where Laila and Majnu is said to have died. Many legends are told about this tomb in Binjaur Village in Anoopgarh city. In fact, it has become a pilgrim site for lovers and newlyweds.

The popular belief is that when a couple visits this tomb and seek blessings from Laila-Majnu, their love is said to remain immortal. A fair is also organised here in the month of June every year to celebrate the immortal of these characters.

There are several legends about Laila-Majnu's time in India. One famous story is that Laila - Majnu were actually known as Laila-Qais, who ran away from Sindh (Pakistan) and hid in India. Later, Laila's brother finds them here and stabs Majnu to death. Laila upon seeing this committed suicide alongside him.

Interestingly, Anoopgarh is very near to Pakistan border. It is a city in Sri Ganganagar district in Rajasthan. An ancient fort in Anoopgarh talks of the Mughal rule in the past. So, looking at the location, it is indeed possible that Laila-Majnu could have come to this place.

The legends of Laila-Majnu has been written in many literary works by great writers. Many versions of this love story can be heard. However, the fact that such a mausoleum exists and still has a prominence in this modern world shows the power and respect we have for love.
