In a move to make getting a driving licence easier, the Ministry of Road Transport has introduced new rules to simplify the procedure and reduce the long queues at regional transport offices (RTOs). Starting from June 1, applicants can now take their driving tests at private driving training centres instead of the traditional state-run RTOs. This is a big change aimed at making the process more efficient and user-friendly.
No More RTO Driving Tests
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced that individuals will no longer need to take their driving test at the Government Regional Transport Office (RTO). Instead, private driving schools will be allowed to conduct tests and provide the necessary certificates for obtaining a driving licence. This change is expected to make the process smoother and quicker for everyone.
Encouraging Cleaner Energy
According to the Hindustan Times, this decision also aims to encourage the use of cleaner energy. By streamlining the driving licence process, the government hopes to phase out around 900,000 outdated government vehicles. Simplified Paperwork
The Ministry has also simplified the paperwork required for obtaining a driving licence. The documents needed will now vary depending on whether you are applying for a two-wheeler or a four-wheeler licence. This change reduces the need for extensive physical examinations at the RTOs, making the process less cumbersome.
Private Driving Training Centres
Under the new rules, driving training centres must have at least 1 acre of land. This means that people looking to get a driver's licence can choose authorised private driving training centres for their testing procedures. These centres will have the authority to conduct tests and issue certificates, making the entire process more convenient.
Applying for a Licence
Applying for a driver's licence is now more flexible. Prospective drivers can apply either online through the official website (https://parivahan.gov.in/) or by visiting an RTO in person. The application fee depends on the type of licence being sought. However, even if you apply online, you will still need to visit the RTO to submit the necessary documents and demonstrate your driving skills for approval.
New Rules for Private Driving Schools
The Ministry has set new requirements for private driving schools to ensure they meet the standards necessary for training and testing drivers. These include:
- Land Requirement: Training centres must have at least 1 acre of land for two-wheeler training and 2 acres for four-wheeler training.
- Testing Facility: Schools must have access to an appropriate testing facility.
- Trainer Qualifications: Trainers must have a high school diploma (or equivalent), at least 5 years of driving experience, and knowledge in biometrics and IT systems.
