With summer vacations approaching, a large number of tourists are visiting destinations in and around the city, and Kochi Water Metro is finally improving its services. From this week, it plans to increase the number of trips on the High Court-Fort Kochi route to handle the growing passenger rush.

Kochi Water Metro's Ongoing Summer Rush
According to a senior official, there was a heavy crowd last weekend, which led to long queues at terminals. However, extra services were operated to manage the crowds. Now, the Water Metro plans to reduce the waiting time between boats from 20 minutes to 10 minutes starting this weekend. The rise in passenger numbers clearly shows the growing travel demand. While the usual daily ridership is around 7,000 people, as many as 11,569 passengers used the service on Saturday, and 12,133 on Sunday.
How will the Authorities Handle the Crowd?
The majority of people travel during the evening because of the cool and pleasant weather. Therefore, additional services will run between 4 pm and 7 pm to handle the extra rush. A large number of passengers are tourists visiting the Kochi Biennale, which is ending on Tuesday, along with others enjoying local sightseeing.
Kochi Water Metro's Future Projects
At the same time, the Water Metro is planning to focus more on tourism in its future projects. For example, the upcoming Kadamakudy route, expected to open by mid-2026, will provide a scenic travel experience for passengers.
Expansion of Kochi Metro's Services
In recent feasibility studies, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has suggested expanding similar services to 18 cities, including Alappuzha and Kollam. Proposed routes in Alappuzha would connect tourist spots like Pathiramanal and Kumarakom, covering about 87.77 km with 15 terminals and 61 electric boats. In Kollam, a 34.85 km network with 15 terminals and 35 boats has been proposed to link key destinations.
