Kerala is expected to continue witnessing unstable weather conditions on May 28, 2026, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing fresh warnings for thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and rough sea activity across several regions of the state. The latest weather update indicates cloudy skies, intermittent rainfall, and rising humidity levels across Kerala, while coastal districts remain under close watch due to high wave activity and sea erosion threats.

According to the latest forecast, temperatures in Kerala are hovering around 29°C during the day, while humidity levels have crossed 80 percent in several places, making conditions feel warmer than the actual temperature. Weather models also indicate scattered rain activity through the afternoon and late-night hours, with thunderstorms likely in isolated pockets.
Thunderstorms And Gusty Winds Likely Across Kerala
The IMD has predicted isolated rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in parts of Kerala throughout May 28. Wind speeds are expected to range between 30 kmph and 40 kmph in multiple districts, especially in coastal and midland regions.
Cloudy weather conditions are expected to continue through the day, while rainfall chances may increase during evening and night hours. Some areas could witness sudden intense showers along with lightning activity.
Residents have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid unnecessary outdoor movement during lightning spells.
Rough Sea Warning Issued Along Kerala Coast
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a warning regarding rough sea conditions, locally referred to as the 'Kallakkadal' phenomenon, along parts of the Kerala coastline.
Authorities have warned that wave heights between 0.8 metres and 1.5 metres may trigger sea intrusion and coastal erosion in vulnerable shoreline areas. Fishermen and residents living near coastal belts have been advised to stay alert and strictly follow official advisories.
The rough sea conditions are expected to continue till late night on May 28, with similar weather activity also being monitored along nearby coastal stretches.
Fishermen Warned Against Venturing Into Sea
Weather authorities have strongly advised fishermen not to venture into multiple sea regions between May 28 and May 31 due to unstable marine conditions and strong winds.
Wind speeds between 40 kmph and 65 kmph are expected across:
- Gulf of Mannar
- Sri Lankan coast
- Southern and central Bay of Bengal
- Odisha and West Bengal coastal regions
- Southern and northern Andaman Sea
- Arabian Sea regions near Somalia and Gujarat coast
Officials have warned that sea conditions may turn dangerous during this period, particularly for small fishing vessels and coastal operations.
Public Asked To Stay Alert
Even though no widespread red alert has been issued for Kerala at present, authorities have urged people to remain careful due to sudden weather fluctuations. Residents in low-lying and coastal areas have been advised to monitor official updates regularly.
With monsoon activity gradually strengthening over the southern region, Kerala is likely to continue witnessing cloudy skies, isolated rain spells, and thunderstorm activity over the coming days.
