Bengaluru has announced an exciting step forward for Karnataka's tourism, focusing on the development of Bidar and Udupi under the Talent Based Destination Development Programme, part of the Swadesh Darshan initiative. With a combined investment of Rs 35 crore, this project aims to enhance these locations and attract more visitors. Bidar will highlight its cultural heritage, while Udupi will emphasize eco-tourism and conservation under the Amrit Dharohar scheme.

Development Plans for Bidar and Udupi
The Ministry of Tourism has selected Bidar and Udupi for this program due to their untapped tourism potential. Bidar, known for its rich cultural heritage, will receive Rs 25 crore for cultural and historical enhancements. Udupi, famous for its serene coastal beauty, will get Rs 10 crore for eco-tourism and environmental improvements.
According to Mohamed Farouk, Director of the Ministry of Tourism in Karnataka, project proposals have already been submitted and are awaiting approval. Funds are expected to be disbursed in the upcoming fiscal year. These improvements aim not just to upgrade facilities but also to create healthy competition among states and destinations, ultimately elevating the visitor experience.
While Karnataka boasts numerous attractions, from Mysuru's palaces to Hampi's ruins, officials highlight that much of its tourism potential remains underutilized. Many plans have yet to be implemented, and there is a growing need for the state to propose additional sites for development. By bridging gaps between central and state tourism efforts, Karnataka can uncover more domestic tourism opportunities and attract a larger audience.
Swadesh Darshan Initiative
Previously, Mysuru and Hampi were the main focus of the Swadesh Darshan scheme in Karnataka. The inclusion of Bidar and Udupi expands this initiative, aiming to create a balance between cultural and eco-tourism. The upgrades will not only benefit tourists but also provide economic growth opportunities for local communities.
A Bright Future for Karnataka Tourism
Karnataka's focus on tourism development is a strategic move to unlock its full potential. By enhancing Bidar's cultural sites and Udupi's eco-tourism offerings, the state seeks to provide a richer, more diverse experience for visitors. This venture, supported by substantial funding and collaboration between governments, is expected to strengthen Karnataka's position as a top destination in India.
As these projects take shape, Karnataka anticipates an increase in tourist arrivals, improved facilities, and significant economic growth. This effort could serve as a model for future tourism initiatives, ensuring the state remains a favorite among travelers.
