Hyderabad Weather Alert: Yellow Alert Issued for April 1; Thunderstorms Likely Across Telangana and Parts of A

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, has issued a yellow alert for April 1, 2026, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across Hyderabad and several districts of Telangana. The advisory also extends to parts of Andhra Pradesh, indicating a broader spell of unstable weather conditions in the region.

The alert comes as pre-summer weather activity intensifies, bringing short-duration but potentially intense changes in conditions over the next 48-72 hours.

What the IMD Forecast Indicates

According to the latest IMD update, the region is likely to experience:

  • Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning
  • Gusty winds ranging between 30-50 km/h
  • Short spells of moderate to intense rainfall
  • Possibility of duststorms in isolated areas

For Hyderabad, skies are expected to remain partly cloudy, with intermittent spells of rain or thunderstorms on April 1, particularly during late afternoon or evening hours.

Districts Under Alert

The warning covers multiple districts across Telangana, including:

Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, Jogulamba Gadwal, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy.

Recent weather activity, including rainfall and lightning in districts such as Adilabad, Nirmal, Karimnagar, and Nizamabad, points to an active system already influencing the region.

Temperature and Weather Trend

Despite the expected rainfall, daytime temperatures are likely to remain elevated:

  • Maximum temperatures: 36°C to 40°C across Telangana
  • Hyderabad may hover around 38°C to 40°C
  • Minimum temperatures: 20°C to 24°C

The current spell reflects a typical pre-monsoon transition phase, where heat persists alongside sudden convective activity.

Outlook for the Coming Days

Weather conditions are expected to remain unsettled through April 2, with continued chances of thunderstorms and gusty winds.

From April 3 onwards, a gradual stabilisation is likely, with clearer skies and a more consistent rise in temperatures, signalling a stronger onset of summer conditions.

What Is Driving the Change

Meteorological officials attribute this pattern to atmospheric instability and trough activity, which is triggering convective cloud formation over Telangana and neighbouring regions, including parts of Andhra Pradesh.

Such systems typically lead to short, intense bursts of rain, lightning, and wind, rather than prolonged rainfall.

Advisory for Residents

Residents in Hyderabad and surrounding districts are advised to take basic precautions:

  • Avoid open areas during lightning activity
  • Secure loose outdoor objects due to gusty winds
  • Plan travel with possible short-duration disruptions in mind
  • Stay updated with official IMD advisories

Working professionals and students may also factor in brief interruptions to commute or power supply, especially during peak thunderstorm hours.

Why This Matters

While the rainfall may offer temporary relief from rising temperatures, it also increases the risk of lightning strikes and wind-related disruptions. With conditions expected to change rapidly, staying informed becomes essential over the next couple of days.
