Chennai is preparing for a week of varied weather, with everything from light showers to thunderstorms expected. Adding to this, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert about a possible cyclonic system forming in the Bay of Bengal. This weather system, currently an upper-air cyclonic circulation near the Sumatra coast and South Andaman Sea, could develop into a low-pressure area by November 23, with chances of growing stronger in the days ahead.

What to Expect This Week
From November 21 to November 27, Chennai will see partly cloudy skies and mild temperatures ranging between 25°C and 31°C. However, towards the weekend, there could be a shift, with some areas experiencing moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
Cyclone Predictions
Different meteorological models suggest varied outcomes for the cyclone:
- IMD's GFS Model: It predicts the system could intensify into a depression by November 24 and possibly become a deep depression or cyclonic storm by November 25. The storm may weaken as it approaches Tamil Nadu around November 27.
- NCEP GFS Model: This model forecasts a stronger system, possibly reaching the status of a severe cyclonic storm by November 25 and maintaining its intensity until it makes landfall.
- ECMWF Model: It offers a less severe outlook, expecting the system to remain a depression as it crosses Tamil Nadu around November 26.
Impact on South India
The cyclone could bring significant weather changes to South India:
- Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Light to moderate rain is expected, with heavy rainfall likely in the Nicobar region from November 21 to November 24.
- Tamil Nadu and Neighboring Areas: Southern Tamil Nadu could see heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms from November 25 to November 27. Light to moderate rain is also expected in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and Mahe. Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh might face isolated heavy rainfall.
Safety Measures
The expected heavy rains and strong winds could disrupt daily life, especially in southern Tamil Nadu. Authorities are urging residents to stay updated with weather reports and follow safety guidelines to avoid any harm.
As the week progresses, Chennai and the surrounding regions will need to stay alert. The unpredictable nature of weather systems reminds us of the importance of preparation and vigilance. Officials and weather agencies are closely monitoring the situation and will provide timely updates to keep everyone informed and safe.
