Chennai Metro Rail is planning to improve last-mile connectivity by introducing feeder bus services around major metro stations. Officials are currently conducting surveys to decide the best routes for these buses. The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is also buying 220 buses to provide shuttle services, helping passengers travel to and

from metro stations across the 54 km Phase I network. However, this new service is expected to start later this year.
How will the Feeder Buses Operate?
Once launched, these feeder buses will operate in a modern, cashless way, similar to systems used in cities like Singapore. Passengers will be able to pay using the Singara Chennai card or through mobile payments. There will be no conductors on these buses, making travel more convenient and faster. Of the 220 buses, 150 will have seating arrangements for 11 passengers plus a driver, while the remaining 70 buses will carry 16 passengers and a driver.
Feeder Buses to Cover Metro Stations
The buses will cover important metro stations such as Koyambedu, Thirumangalam, Chennai Airport, Meenambakkam, Nanganallur, Wimco Nagar, Ashok Nagar, Saidapet, and Little Mount. Although 22 mini buses already operate in some areas, more buses will be added under this plan to meet growing demand.
Why are the Feeder Buses Essential?
The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) has highlighted the importance of better last-mile connectivity in its mobility plan, stating that it will help increase metro usage. Officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) said surveys are being conducted to understand how people travel to metro stations and from which areas. Around 2,000 commuters will be included in the study. The feeder buses are expected to run within a 6 km radius of most stations, while Chennai Airport may have services up to 8 km. Four depots will be set up at Koyambedu, Saidapet, Pallavaram, and Wimco Nagar. However, authorities will finalise routes before launching the service.
