Chennai Metro Rail Limited has started planning a major project to improve travel in Chennai by developing multimodal hubs at 41 Metro stations to make last-mile connectivity easier for passengers, helping them reach their final destinations more smoothly.

Redesign of Chennai Metro Stations
Under this proposal, areas within a 500-metre radius of each Metro station will be redesigned. The goal is to connect different modes of transport, including Metro trains, buses, autos, taxis, and suburban rail services in a seamless way, which will allow commuters to easily switch from one mode of transport to another without any difficulty. All 41 stations, including major ones like Central, Egmore, Guindy, Saidapet, and Alandur, will be upgraded under this project.
Preparation of DPR
To move the project forward, CMRL has issued a tender to prepare a detailed project report (DPR). This report will include plans for design, infrastructure improvements, and how the project will be carried out.
Project Inclusion
Several improvements have been proposed as part of the plan, which include building better footpaths, shaded walkways, and skywalks to make walking safer and more comfortable. There will also be barrier-free access for the movement of all passengers. Dedicated pick-up and drop-off points for autos and taxis will be created, and bus stops may be shifted closer to Metro stations to reduce walking distance. Improved feeder services are also planned to help commuters travel conveniently.
Addressal of Commuters Problems
The project responds to common problems faced by passengers, such as poor pedestrian facilities, unsafe crossings, and a lack of coordination between different transport systems. By addressing these issues, the plan aims to make daily travel more efficient and comfortable.
