A New Species of Horned Frog Discovered in Arunachal Pradesh

In a remarkable contribution to India's herpetofaunal diversity, scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have discovered a new frog species in Arunachal Pradesh's Tale Wildlife Sanctuary. This discovery, announced on Tuesday, highlights the rich biodiversity of the region and the ongoing efforts to explore and document it.

The newly identified species is a forest-dwelling horned frog, a group known for their distinctive cranial protrusions. This particular species was uncovered by a dedicated team of ZSI scientists hailing from Shillong, Itanagar, and Pune. According to Bhaskar Saikia, one of the lead scientists, the discovery overturns an earlier erroneous report from 2019 that identified the Maoson horned frog (Xenophrys maosonensis) in India.

"The research, published in the current edition of the Zoological Survey of India, overturns an earlier erroneous report of the Maoson horned frog (Xenophrys maosonensis) in India, which was reported by ZSI researchers in Shillong in 2019," said Saikia.

The reclassification was prompted by further analysis that revealed significant genetic differences between the Indian specimen and the previously identified X. maosonensis, which is native to Vietnam and China. This genetic disparity necessitated a reevaluation of the species' identity, ultimately leading to the classification of a new species.

The research team was spearheaded by Bhaskar Saikia and his colleague Bikramjit Sinha from ZSI Shillong. They were supported by KP Dinesh and A. Shabnam from ZSI Pune, and Ilona Jacinta Kharkongor from ZSI Itanagar. Together, their collaborative efforts have contributed to the growing understanding of India's unique amphibian diversity.

This discovery underscores the importance of continued exploration and study of India's wildlife, particularly in biodiverse regions like Arunachal Pradesh. It also highlights the role of genetic analysis in accurately identifying and classifying species, ensuring that scientific records reflect true biological diversity. The identification of this new horned frog species not only enriches India's natural heritage but also underscores the critical role of scientific research in conservation efforts.
