Toy Train from Pathankot

The 164-kilometre-long route through the Kangra Valley is the longest operational toy train route in India. The journey takes around 10 hours and offers breathtaking views of forests, rivers, villages, hills, tea gardens, and the Himalayan foothills. Despite covering such a long distance, the train remains one of the most affordable travel experiences in the country.

Train Services Suspension

Train services were suspended after severe floods in 2022 damaged the important Chakki Railway Bridge near the Punjab-Himachal Pradesh border. The damage cut off rail connectivity and forced Indian Railways to stop services on the route. After extensive repair work and safety improvements, the railway line has now reopened, bringing relief to residents and excitement to railway enthusiasts.

Pathankot-Jogindernagar Railway

The Pathankot-Jogindernagar Railway was first opened in 1929 and is considered a remarkable engineering achievement. The route is famous not for its speed but for its stunning scenery. During the journey, the train passes through tea gardens, pine-covered hills, and traditional villages. Passengers also cross nearly 1,000 bridges and travel through 484 curves, making the ride memorable and picturesque.

Important Stoppages

The train starts from Pathankot in Punjab and passes through important stations such as Chakki Bank, Nurpur Road, Jawalamukhi Road, Kangra, Kangra Mandir, Nagrota, Palampur, Baijnath Paprola, and finally Jogindernagar. Many of these stations provide access to popular tourist attractions, temples, and trekking destinations.

Ticketing through Indian Railways

One of the biggest attractions of the route is its low fare. Reports suggest that second-class tickets for the entire journey start at around ₹40, making it one of India's cheapest scenic train rides. Tickets can be booked through Indian Railways' reservation systems, including the IRCTC platform.

How will Heritage Trains Benefit Tourists?

Unlike many heritage railways that mainly cater to tourists, this route continues to serve local communities. The journey offers travellers a chance to experience everyday life in the Himalayan foothills while enjoying spectacular natural beauty. For those who love slow travel, railway history, and mountain scenery, the Pathankot-Jogindernagar toy train remains a truly unforgettable experience.
