The Maharashtra government has approved the expansion of the Navi Mumbai Metro network, a major project aimed at improving connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The decision was taken by the Cabinet Infrastructure Committee headed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The metro expansion is part of a larger infrastructure package worth ₹22,611 crore approved by the state government.

Navi Mumbai Metro Project
A key highlight of the project is the extension of the Navi Mumbai Metro to connect Pendhar with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. The plan includes the development of Metro Line 2, which will link Pendhar directly to the airport, making travel easier for residents and air passengers. At the same time, Metro Line 1A will connect Sagar Sangam with CBD Belapur.
Mumbai Metro Extension
With these additions, a continuous 28-kilometre metro corridor will be created from Sagar Sangam to the international airport. The expansion will add 13 new stations to the network, including two stations on Line 1A and 11 stations on Line 2. The government expects the improved metro system to significantly enhance public transport options and reduce travel time across Navi Mumbai.
How will the Metro Expansion Project Benefit Passengers?
The project has been approved at an estimated cost of ₹5,575 crore. Officials believe the expanded metro network will serve nearly 12 lakh passengers every day in the coming years. The new connectivity is expected to support the growth of the airport region, improve access to residential and commercial areas, and encourage greater use of public transport.
The metro expansion is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening transport infrastructure in Navi Mumbai and supporting future economic development in the region.
