Maharashtra Government Unveils Metro Line 8 to Connect Navi Mumbai Airport with CSMIA by December 25

With the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) expected to commence operations on December 25, a major concern is that it currently lacks mass transit connectivity. To address this, the Maharashtra government has planned a new Metro line that will link the new airport with Mumbai's existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International

Airport (CSMIA). This new route, known as Metro Line 8 or the Gold Line, will directly connect the two airports and also provide access to commuters from Mumbai's eastern and Western suburbs.

Mumbai Metro Stations

Metro Line 8 will have 20 stations and cover about 35 km, aiming to create a fast and convenient airport-to-airport connection, which has become necessary because both airports will function together as a twin-airport system. With NMIA expected to handle a large number of passengers, a quick link between the two hubs will make travel easier for transit passengers, airline staff, cargo operators, and long-distance train travellers coming via Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT). Currently, road travel between the two airports takes 70-90 minutes, and sometimes even more during heavy traffic. The new Metro line is expected to reduce this travel time to around 30 minutes.

Maharashtra's Public-Private Partnership Model

The Maharashtra government has approved the overall plan. CIDCO will build the corridor through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, similar to the arrangement used for Mumbai Metro Line 1. The project is estimated to cost around ₹23,000 crore. CIDCO has requested 20% financial support from both the central and state governments, while the remaining amount will be invested by a private partner under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model.

The Metro line will include six underground and 14 elevated stations. By 2031, it is expected to carry around 10.3 lakh passengers daily. It will also connect with six other Metro lines, suburban trains, major bus stations, and LTT, providing smooth access across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Tendering for the project is yet to begin.
