Several parts of Kerala are expected to witness heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next few days as weather activity intensifies across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for multiple districts, warning residents about isolated heavy rain, waterlogging and possible traffic disruptions.

The current weather pattern is being influenced by a well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal. According to the IMD, the system continues to strengthen and is supported by cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level.
These conditions are also helping the southwest monsoon advance earlier than usual toward the Andaman Sea and nearby regions.
Districts Under Yellow Alert
For Thursday, May 14, yellow alert has been issued in:
- Idukki
- Ernakulam
- Malappuram
- Kozhikode
- Kannur
- Kasaragod
On Friday, the alert is expected to continue for:
- Palakkad
- Malappuram
- Kozhikode
- Wayanad
- Kannur
- Kasaragod
Meanwhile, Palakkad, Malappuram and Thrissur are likely to remain under alert conditions on Saturday as well.
The IMD has predicted rainfall between 7 cm and 11 cm at isolated locations in these districts.
Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Expected
Apart from heavy rain, the weather department has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 50 kmph in several parts of the state, especially coastal and hilly regions.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid standing under trees, near electric poles or in open spaces during lightning activity. People have also been asked to disconnect electrical appliances during severe weather conditions whenever necessary.
Damage Reported in Some Areas
Heavy summer rain and strong winds on Tuesday reportedly caused damage across parts of Ernakulam, where around 10 houses suffered partial damage. Traffic disruptions were also reported in certain areas due to uprooted trees and poor visibility.
In Malappuram, severe weather conditions turned tragic after four youths reportedly lost their lives following lightning-related incidents near a hilltop tourist location close to Mankada.
Monsoon Likely to Advance Early
The IMD has stated that conditions are becoming favourable for the advancement of the southwest monsoon over parts of the south Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 16.
Weather experts believe the 2026 monsoon season is progressing faster than usual. While the monsoon normally reaches the Andaman Sea around May 20, current indicators suggest an earlier arrival this year. Kerala's mainland monsoon onset may also occur ahead of its traditional June 1 timeline if prevailing weather conditions continue.
Advisory for Residents
Residents in rain-affected districts are advised to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain
- Stay indoors during thunderstorms and lightning
- Be cautious in low-lying and waterlogged areas
- Keep electronic devices protected during power fluctuations
- Follow official weather updates and district advisories regularly
Authorities have also warned that intense rainfall may lead to temporary flooding, traffic congestion, uprooting of trees and reduced visibility in several districts over the coming days.
