By Manoj Menon

Malana is situated at an altitude of 3029 mt, on the banks of the torrential Malana River. Located near the Kullu Valley, it offers mesmerising views of the Deo Tiba and Chandrakhani peaks.

The local language spoken here is 'Kanashi', which is believed to be a mixture of Sanskrit and Tibetan dialects. Lifestyle of the locals is simple as Malana is untouched by the glamour of the city life.

Known for its serene atmosphere and rich culture, it has been a part of several documentaries which includes Malana - A Lost Identity and Malana - Globalization of a Himalayan Village.

The natives of the region religiously follow their customs and traditions. According to folklore, the village of Malana was founded by soldiers of the army of Alexander III of Macedon and is also believed that the natives here are the descendants of Alexander.

Interacting with the natives is the best way to understand the culture and the customs they follow. Travellers can enjoy trekking and other similar activities though they are advised not to touch the belongings of the villagers as it is considered to be an offence.

Jamula Temple

The Jamula Temple is dedicated to Jamula Rishi Devta, a sage who is said to have lived here. Legend has it that the sage was in search of a proper place to meditate. During his search, he carried a bag of 18 pictures of different gods with him.

At some point in his hunt, the pictures fell from his bag and spread all across the Beas Valley owing to the wind. The 18 different places, where the pictures supposedly fell, became holy sites for the locals.
