Go Green, Chennai Airport Is Working Entirely On Renewable Energy Sources

Chennai Airport has set a new benchmark by becoming the airport that runs solely on renewable energy sources.

Chennai Green Airport

The airport's effort to go green is a commendable move in the direction of encouraging sustainable development in India. The airport employs a combination of electricity produced by rooftop solar panels, solar energy acquired from businesses, and electricity purchased from Tangedco under a green tariff.

The achievement was made recently when renewable energy utilization increased from 50%. Additionally, runways and taxiway lights are powered by solar energy too. It is a much-needed action given that the nation is the most populated country in the world and heavily depends on fossil fuels.

The process:

On average, the airport uses 63,92,675 Kilowatt-hour each month. The terminal fittings were replaced with LED lights. The airport was able to use 50% renewable energy when it started using power from rooftop solar panels that were placed on the terminal buildings 2 years ago.

Through the use of solar energy at the terminals, LED lighting, and effective air conditioning, the airport cut carbon emissions by 2,200 tonnes yearly and achieved energy savings of one hundred million.

As effective use of the air conditioning is being made, and LED lighting has been installed which contributed to lowering the pollution. Airlines have begun to transition to electric cars in an effort to minimize pollution and improve their carbon footprint. Its in the news that the new ground-handling businesses might add electric vehicles to transport bags, etc whenever they will take over.

An official statement claims that the recently opened integrated terminal has also been awarded a green rating for its energy-efficient construction.

59% of the electrical energy utilised by Chennai Airport is solar energy that is obtained through third-party power procurement, 3% is satisfied by an internal 1.5MWp rooftop solar plant, and the remaining 38% is purchased from Tangedco under green tariff.
The airport's decision to switch to renewable energy sources is a clear signal that India is taking its goal to cut carbon emissions seriously.
