Plan A Baku To Sheki Scenic Road Trip This Winter – Discover Azerbaijan

Until its independence in 1991, Azerbaijan was ruled by great powers including Persia, Mongolia and Russia. Now, this beautiful, hospitable little country is a Muslim state with a relaxed attitude to women's dress, alcohol and other faiths, and it's become an exciting tourist destination.

Nineteenth-century Baku was a major oil exporter, and international investment has once again made the big, cosmopolitan capital an oil-boom town. The old city seems unaffected by the turbulent 20th century; within its walls, amid cobbled lanes, colourful markets and medieval mosques, stands the massive Maiden's Tower (assumed to be defensive, but possibly an ancient Zorastrian temple) and the medieval seat of Azerbaijan's ruling dynasty. Among several interesting museums is an excellent Carpet Museum. Along the bustling waterfront, the Caspian is turquoise but thick with oil.

Outside Baku are bleak reminders of the Soviet petrochemical industry, with views over the desolate coastal town of Sumquayit Westward, the road hugs the foothills of the Caucasus. Shameka lies in rolling countryside luxuriant with fruit, vegetables and vineyards, little remains of the ancient city but the hilltop ruins of Gulistan Castle.

From Ismayilli, a scenic cliff-top road leads to Lahie, a beautiful mountain village whose skilled carpet makers claim descent from the Persians. Near the pleasant market town of Qabala is the site of one of the oldest towns in Azerbaijan, dating from around the 3rd century BC.

Sheki, in its glorious mountain setting, was a major staging post on the Silk Road - in its heyday, there were five caravanserai - and its silk weaving industry continues, though now restricted to small workshops. This lovely town has museums, a royal place and an attractive old town by the stream beneath a fortress.
