The Kalka-Shimla railway line, a UNESCO World Heritage site, stretches approximately 90 kilometres. This historic route, established by the British in 1903, features 103 tunnels, 800 bridges, 919 curves, and 18 stations. It has long served as a crucial connection to Shimla.

On Monday, the trial run of the new Vistadome coaches on this heritage track was successfully completed. The train journey with these new coaches finished 30 minutes earlier than usual, indicating a promising reduction in travel time. Some stations faced extended waiting periods for train crossings during the trial, but these delays are expected to be reduced in future trials or regular operations.
Enhanced Travel Experience with Vistadome Coaches
The current journey from Kalka to Shimla takes around six hours, with trains running at speeds between 20 to 23 kilometres per hour. However, during Monday's trial, the Vistadome coach achieved a speed of 25 kilometres per hour. The aim is to further increase this speed to 30 kilometres per hour, potentially cutting travel time down to four hours.
This improvement depends on addressing challenges related to the track's sharp curves, where safety concerns currently limit maximum speeds. Overcoming these obstacles could significantly enhance the efficiency of the journey.
Boosting Tourism and Passenger Comfort
The introduction of the first Vistadome coach on this route occurred in December 2018, with regular services commencing in December 2019. With these new coaches, tourists can look forward to a more efficient trip while enjoying stunning views along the way. This development is anticipated to boost tourism by providing passengers with a scenic and comfortable travel experience to Shimla.
In addition to reducing travel time, the Vistadome coaches offer an enhanced travel experience. Passengers can enjoy panoramic views through large windows and glass ceilings, making their journey even more memorable.
As efforts continue to improve speeds and reduce delays on this historic railway line, travellers can expect a blend of modern comfort and historical charm on their trips between Kalka and Shimla.
This initiative not only aims at improving travel efficiency but also at preserving the heritage value of this iconic railway line. By balancing modern advancements with historical preservation, authorities hope to attract more visitors while maintaining the line's unique character.
The successful trial run marks a significant step towards achieving these goals. As further trials and adjustments are made, passengers can look forward to quicker and more enjoyable journeys on one of India's most picturesque railway routes.
