The Malviya Bridge, which spans the sacred Ganges River in Varanasi, is an iconic structure that holds both historical and architectural significance. Built 137 years ago, it has played a vital role in connecting the city of Kashi (now Varanasi) with the rest of the nation. Originally named the Dufferin Bridge, this engineering marvel was inaugurated in 1887 and designed by Frederick Thomas Granville Walton from the Oudh and Rohilkhand Railway. What makes it unique is that it was the first double-decker bridge in the Indian subcontinent, featuring rail tracks on the lower deck and a roadway on the upper deck.
Renaming and Cultural Importance
In 1948, the bridge was renamed the Malviya Bridge in honor of Madan Mohan Malaviya, a prominent freedom fighter and the founder of Banaras Hindu University. This renaming strengthened the bridge's ties to Indian culture and history. The local people of Varanasi have long referred to it as the Rajghat Bridge, given its location near Rajghat. The bridge has become deeply embedded in the cultural identity of Varanasi, serving as a gateway for both trains and vehicles passing through the city.
A Monumental Upgrade for the Future
Recently, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced an exciting upgrade for the historic Malviya Bridge. A massive project, with an estimated cost of Rs 2,642 Crores, is planned to build a new, dual-decked structure that will increase the bridge's traffic capacity. The lower deck will have four railway lines, while the upper deck will feature a six-lane highway. This development will transform the Malviya Bridge into one of the world's largest traffic-handling bridges. As Minister Vaishnaw stated, "This new bridge will be counted among the biggest in the world."
