Kolkata Metro Faces Morning Disruption as 7:38am Technical Fault Halts Services for About an Hour

Metro commuters faced problems on the first Monday of the New Year after train services were disrupted for about an hour starting at 7.38 am due to a technical fault. Many students and office-goers who travel from the southern parts of the city to the north were affected. Trains were

not running between the new terminal, Shahid Khudiram (Briji), and Mahanayak Uttam Kumar (Tollygunge), causing confusion and delays during the busy morning hours.

Kolkata Metro Disruption

Passengers arriving at Shahid Khudiram station found no clear information about the disruption or when services would restart. Monimoy Ghosh, a resident of Patuli, said he had gone to the station with his son for school but found no trains. With no updates from staff, they were forced to take an auto to Tollygunge. From there, boarding a metro towards Netaji Bhavan was extremely difficult because the train was overcrowded, and they were pushed into the coach.

Metro Railway later released a statement at around 9.40 am, explaining that normal services had resumed by 8.39 am after a short technical issue. During the disruption, limited services were run between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Dakshineswar in both directions.

Metro Commuters' Opinions

Several commuters expressed frustration over frequent metro problems. Satadru Hazra, a Kudghat resident and PWD worker, said services are often stopped due to technical faults or other incidents, usually for an hour or more. He added that trains rarely follow the timetable and are either early or delayed. He also complained about the closure of the old Kavi Subhash station, which was shut in July last year. Though authorities promised to reopen it within nine months, repair work has not started yet. He also pointed out that the lack of a crossover at Shahid Khudiram station causes further delays.

The problems continued later in the day when a train heading towards Dakshineswar got stuck at Kalighat station around 12.40 pm. Services resumed after about 7 to 10 minutes. Though it was not peak hour, the delay still affected operations. Metro officials said it was a temporary technical issue.
