Thailand to Simplify Visa Rules
Thailand, globally renowned for its vibrant tourism, is set to revise its visa regulations and extend the duration of stays for tourists from India, China, and other countries. This strategic move aims to reinvigorate the country's tourism revenue and attract more visitors in the post-pandemic era.

Thailand's new Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, who assumed office in August 2023, has articulated a vision to boost tourism revenue to nearly $100 billion (₹8.3 lakh crore) by expanding the list of visa-exempt countries and offering longer stays for international travelers.
Presently, Indian travelers are required to pay 2,000 baht (₹4,715.29) for a 15-day visa on arrival. Under the proposed reforms, Indian visitors will have the option to enter Thailand without a visa and enjoy an extended stay of up to 30 days. This change also applies to Chinese tourists, a substantial segment of Thailand's tourist demographic.
In a tweet, the Prime Minister disclosed discussions with executives from Airports of Thailand and several airlines regarding these measures. The immediate goal is to attract more foreign tourists during the peak tourism season of the fourth quarter. The airport operator has pledged to alleviate congestion, augment flight capacity by 20%, and expedite immigration clearance.
Thailand has already reopened 17 destinations, referred to as "sandbox destinations," permitting fully vaccinated travelers to enter by air without quarantine after spending a minimum of 21 days in one of the approved countries. These destinations encompass Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai, and others. After a seven-night stay in these designated areas, visitors can explore other parts of Thailand freely.
Most of Thailand's tourism and business services have resumed without constraints on travel within the country. Many major attractions, such as Bang Pa-In Palace, Chang Hua Man Royal Project, Bhubing Palace, Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles in the Grand Palace Complex, and Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre, have also reopened. However, entertainment venues, including pubs and bars, will remain closed until further notice.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has urged Indian passengers traveling back to India to conduct an RT-PCR test within 72 hours before departure and upload the results on the Air Suvidha website. This aligns with India's updated COVID travel rules, mandating RT-PCR tests for travelers from Thailand and five other Asian countries from January 1, 2023.
The TAT has committed to vigilant monitoring of any changes or updates to COVID-19 protocols that could affect Indian travelers to Thailand. Additionally, the TAT has assured that testing facilities in Thailand are widespread and readily accessible.
Thailand's decision to relax visa regulations and extend stays for Indian and Chinese tourists is poised to invigorate its tourism sector, which has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Thailand aspires to welcome more than 20 million foreign tourists next year, a substantial increase from an estimated 10 million this year.
