After staying shut for over a year for viewing, the Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world, will reopen from Saturday. Open for tourists and travellers who wish to tour the marble masterpiece under the moonglow - the district administration announced on Friday. The night viewing of the Taj Mahal was suspended, on March 17, 2020, on the account of the Covid-19 outbreak.
ASI Archaeologist of Agra district, Vasant Kumar Swarnkar, declared that the night viewing is open from this Saturday, August 21, 23 and 24, as the memorial is shut every week during the weekend due to the lockdown being in effect.
It's announced there are three different time slots for visitants. The three-time slots are 8:30-9 pm, 9-9:30 pm and 9:30-10 pm.
"In every slot, 50 tourists would be allowed as per guidelines of the Supreme Court," he added.
"The tickets can be booked a day in advance from ASI office's counter on 22 Mall Road in Agra," Kumar said.
Also, the vice-president of the Tourism Guild of Agra, Rajeev Saxena, applauded it as a good step. However, it would not draw weekend tourists until the restriction of lockdown on August 22. And curfew after 10 pm was not lifted.
"Tourists want to enjoy the nightlife of the city, they don't want to be packed in their hotels after 10 pm," he said.
Monika Sharma, a government-approved tour escort, acknowledged the move and said it was a glimmer of hope for the resurrection of Agra's tourism sector.
