Shimla Weather Update: IMD Predicts Yellow Alert, Rains, Snowfalls, Bad Air Quality

Shimla is preparing for a cold day, with the possibility of rain or snow, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The city's temperatures are expected to range from a high of 13°C to a chilly low of 4°C. Locals and visitors are advised to dress in layers and carry umbrellas to stay protected from the unpredictable weather.

Shimla IMD Predicts Rains Snowfalls

Shimla's weather is expected to remain cold throughout the day, and residents are urged to prepare for fluctuating temperatures. The IMD forecasts that the temperatures will vary between 14°C and 15°C during the day and drop to around 3°C to 4°C at night. In addition to the cold weather, occasional rain or snow is expected, making it important for everyone to stay warm and safe.

However, it's not just the cold that is a concern. Shimla's air quality is also troubling, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) currently at 122, placing it in the "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" category. The main pollutant contributing to the poor air quality is PM2.5, fine particulate matter that can affect health, especially for children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing health conditions. PM2.5 can travel deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, leading to problems such as asthma, lung diseases, and heart conditions.

Health Advisory and Precautionary Measures

Given the air quality concerns, experts have issued a health advisory for sensitive groups. It is recommended that children, the elderly, and people with respiratory or heart problems minimize outdoor activities. They should also use air purifiers at home and wear N95 masks when going outside. For those not in sensitive groups, it's still advisable to limit outdoor activities and spend less time in polluted air.

As for the general weather outlook, Shimla is expected to stay cold for the rest of the week, with temperatures hovering around 14°C during the day and 3°C to 4°C at night. The air quality is likely to remain "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups," and people are urged to continue taking precautions.

Managing the Cold and Pollution

Shimla has been experiencing some shifts in weather, with a temperature of 17.4°C recorded the previous day, which was 4°C higher than usual for this time of year. The low temperature was 4°C, slightly below average, and humidity levels increased throughout the day from 42% in the morning to 53% in the evening. Despite these fluctuations, no rainfall was reported in the last 24 hours.

To minimize health risks from pollution, experts recommend staying indoors with windows closed, using air purifiers, avoiding outdoor exercise, and refraining from smoking. After rain, it's also suggested to briefly ventilate homes to improve indoor air quality. Wearing N95 masks is advised for necessary outdoor activities.

As Shimla faces both cold weather and ongoing air quality issues, the IMD and AQICN.org urge residents to take all necessary precautions to protect their health and well-being during these challenging environmental conditions.
