Kolkata Metro to Launch Full-Scale Reconstruction at Kavi Subhash This April, Adds Rake-Reversal Facility

Metro Railway is planning to begin full-scale reconstruction work at the Blue Line's Kavi Subhash station around April, according to senior officials. At the same time, work will also start on setting up a rake-reversal facility at Shahid Khudiram, which is the new southern end of the line. To complete this work, Metro authorities will need to take weekend service blocks.

Repair & Reconstruction Work

Earlier, Metro Railway general manager Subhransu Sekhar Mishra had said that repair and restoration work at Kavi Subhash would begin after Chhath Puja. Before that, it was announced that work would start after Diwali 2025. Now, three months later, officials have confirmed that both projects are expected to begin in April. They explained that installing the crossover system at Shahid Khudiram is technically complex and is expected to take about three months to complete.

New Design Finalised

Officials said the old design of Kavi Subhash station had flaws, which led to cracks in the pillars supporting the platforms. Because of this, Metro Railway wants to be extra careful while rebuilding the station. The design for the new station has already been finalised and the contract awarded, but some technical checks are still being reviewed to ensure safe construction.

Blue Line Metro

The Blue Line has been under heavy pressure since the Kavi Subhash station was shut down indefinitely after structural damage was found. The station is currently being slowly demolished, and rebuilding will start only after demolition is complete. Until then, Shahid Khudiram will continue to function as the terminal station.

However, Shahid Khudiram does not have a proper rake-reversal facility, which is essential for a terminal station. As a result, empty trains still travel to the closed Kavi Subhash station to reverse direction. This process earlier caused delays of 8-10 minutes due to safety rules set by the Commission of Railway Safety. Recently, these rules were temporarily relaxed, allowing quicker turnarounds. Since January 19, this change has helped improve the frequency of Blue Line services.
