San Francisco Launches First Driverless Bus Service Alongside Robotaxi Expansion
San Francisco, a city known for its innovation and tech prowess, introduced the United States' inaugural driverless bus service this Monday, following the successful growth of its Robotaxi fleet. The new service, known as SF Go, aims to provide a secure, convenient, and affordable mode of transportation for both residents and visitors.

These driverless buses are electric and have a capacity for up to 12 passengers each. They follow a set route that connects downtown San Francisco to popular spots like Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, and Golden Gate Park. To navigate through traffic and avoid obstacles, the buses employ sensors, cameras, and artificial intelligence. They also maintain communication with one another and a central control center to ensure smooth operations.
During the initial month of operation, SF Go offers its service for free, and subsequently, riders will pay a flat fare of $2 per trip. Passengers can reserve a ride using a mobile app or a kiosk at designated stops. The service runs from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, with a 10-minute frequency during peak hours and a 20-minute frequency during off-peak hours.
This driverless bus service's launch follows the expansion of San Francisco's Robotaxi fleet from 50 to 200 vehicles last month. These robotaxis, operated by Waymo, provide on-demand rides within a specific city area enclosed by a virtual fence. While they currently have a safety driver on board to intervene in emergencies, they are anticipated to become completely autonomous by year-end.
London Breed, San Francisco's Mayor, emphasized that the introduction of the driverless bus service and the expansion of the Robotaxi fleet are aligned with the city's vision to lead in intelligent mobility and sustainability. She said, "We take pride in being the first city in the U.S. to offer a driverless bus service that is accessible, reliable, and eco-friendly. Additionally, we're thrilled to witness our Robotaxi fleet expanding, providing more choices for our residents and visitors. These initiatives will help us reduce traffic congestion, lower emissions, cut costs, and enhance safety, convenience, and overall quality of life for everyone."
What is the geofenced area of San Francisco?
The term "geofenced area" refers to the designated region where Robotaxi companies are permitted to operate their autonomous vehicles. The exact boundaries of this area can vary depending on the company and the service. For example, as per a web search, Cruise operates its robotaxis in select areas of San Francisco, excluding much of Downtown. In contrast, Waymo claims to offer rides throughout a comprehensive SF service area but does not specify exact locations. To verify the availability of Robotaxi services in your area, you can use their respective apps or websites.
