The Kerala Tourism Department is taking a creative approach to boost tourism by transforming unused spaces under overpass bridges into attractive public areas. The first project in this initiative is the beautification of the Kollam railway overpass. This Rs 2 crore project aims to revitalize neglected areas beneath overpasses and convert them into vibrant public spaces. The Kollam railway overpass will be the starting point for this statewide effort, with plans to develop similar community hubs across Kerala.

In Kollam, the project focuses on the area under the railway overbridge near S.N. College. The goal is to turn this unused space into an appealing site for the public. The project includes various amenities such as walking tracks, street furniture, food kiosks, game courts, a chess area, a skating space, an open gym, and a yoga-cum-meditation center. The walking tracks will provide pedestrian-friendly pathways for leisurely strolls, while the street furniture will offer benches and seating areas for people to relax. Food kiosks will serve snacks and refreshments, adding to the area's appeal.
The game courts will cater to sports enthusiasts, with facilities for badminton and basketball. For those who enjoy mental games, a dedicated chess area will be available. The skating space will provide a designated area for roller skating, while the open gym will feature outdoor fitness stations for exercise enthusiasts. The yoga-cum-meditation center will offer a tranquil space for mindfulness and relaxation.
This innovative project is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, making it a New Year gift for the people of Kollam in 2025. The initiative not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the area but also integrates tourism schemes with creative design policies. It showcases how neglected spaces can be repurposed into beautiful public areas for relaxation and entertainment.
The Kerala Tourism Department's effort with the Kollam railway overpass beautification project is just the beginning. The state plans to extend this initiative to other cities, creating a network of inviting community hubs under overpasses. This project sets a precedent for utilizing unused spaces innovatively, contributing to the well-being of the community and boosting tourism in the region. By transforming these neglected areas, Kerala is creating new, attractive destinations for both locals and visitors, making the state an even more appealing place to visit.
