Kerala, a popular destination for vacationers, is currently grappling with its most severe outbreak of Hepatitis A in recent memory. According to government data, the state has reported 1,977 confirmed cases and 12 deaths from the virus since January, with an additional 5,536 suspected cases and 15 more deaths under investigation.

Hepatitis A is a viral infection that affects the liver, causing acute inflammation. It is primarily transmitted through the fecal-to-oral route and can lead to symptoms lasting several months, although they often resolve without treatment.
In response to the outbreak, Kerala's Health Minister, Veena George, has placed four districts - Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur, and Ernakulam - on high alert. Measures include chlorination of water sources in affected areas, the provision of boiled water in restaurants, and inspections to ensure that food establishments adhere to health standards.
Ernakulam is among the worst-affected areas, with around 200 reported cases in the past month alone. One fatality and 41 hospitalizations have been recorded, with four individuals in critical condition. Although Hepatitis A typically does not result in chronic liver disease, severe cases can lead to liver failure and prove fatal.
The virus is highly contagious and can spread rapidly through person-to-person contact, particularly in communities with poor sanitation. Symptoms include stomachache, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, fatigue, high fever, jaundice, joint pains, itchy skin, and changes in urine and stool color. These symptoms typically manifest within two to five weeks after exposure.
Certain groups are at higher risk of Hepatitis A infection, including those residing in areas with poor sanitation, homeless individuals, intravenous drug users, people living with HIV, and those in close contact with infected persons.
Experts emphasize the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices, including regular handwashing and consumption of safe, clean water and food, to prevent the spread of the virus. Additionally, vaccination is available and recommended for individuals at risk of exposure to Hepatitis A.
