The Indian Railways is preparing to launch a new mobile application by the end of December aimed at simplifying services for millions of passengers. Created by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), this all-in-one app will combine multiple services, like booking tickets, checking train schedules, getting train status updates, and buying platform passes. This new app, known as the 'super app,' will also work closely with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to make travel smoother for everyone.

Right now, passengers often have to use several apps or websites to access different railway services. For example, they use the IRCTC Rail Connect app for booking train tickets and Rail Madad for filing complaints or making suggestions. The upcoming super app aims to bring all these services together, so passengers only need one app for their travel needs. This means less hassle and more convenience, as they can manage everything from one place.
The collaboration with IRCTC, India's main ticket booking platform for reserved seats, is particularly important. IRCTC Rail Connect, which has more than 100 million downloads, is the most popular railway app in India. With the super app, CRIS and IRCTC are working together to make sure that users get an easy and smooth experience. An official from the project mentioned, "IRCTC will continue as the interface between CRIS and passengers buying train tickets. Integration between the planned super app and IRCTC is underway." This highlights the importance of IRCTC as the main link for ticket purchases, even as services are combined into the new app.
This initiative is also a smart financial move for IRCTC. In the fiscal year 2023-24, IRCTC reported a net profit of ₹1,111.26 crore with a revenue of ₹4,270.18 crore, with ticket sales making up 30.33% of its total earnings. More than 453 million bookings were made during that period. By adding the super app, IRCTC has another way to increase its revenue. An official commented, "IRCTC sees the 'super app' as another avenue for earnings," which highlights how this app not only improves passenger experience but also benefits IRCTC financially.
Besides boosting convenience for travelers, the super app also upgrades the entire system for travel booking services, benefiting both passengers and private travel agencies that rely on IRCTC for reservations. Centralizing services under one app will help the Indian Railways provide a more efficient, easy-to-use platform for all passengers, making traveling by train even more enjoyable.
The Indian Railways' new super app is set to revolutionize railway travel in India. By combining various services into one place and enhancing its integration with IRCTC, the super app will give passengers an unprecedented level of convenience. This initiative not only brings Indian Railways into the digital age but also opens new revenue streams, showing a commitment to meeting the changing needs of travelers in today's fast-paced world.
