Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to officially open the final section of the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro on January 12, 2026. This new stretch connects Sachivalaya (Secretariat) in Gandhinagar to Mahatma Mandir, giving commuters better transport options between Gujarat's biggest city and its capital.

Upcoming Preparations
Preparations are in full swing for the launch. The Prime Minister is likely to ride the metro from the Old High Court station in Ahmedabad to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar as part of the event. After the metro ride, he is scheduled to take part in another official programme with a visiting German delegation.
Extended Routes
This extended route adds five new metro stations: Akshardham, Old Secretariat, Sector-16, Sector-24, and Mahatma Mandir. The new 5.36-kilometre section improves access to important spots like the Akshardham Temple and Dandi Kutir.
Test Runs
Before the official opening, several test runs were completed successfully. The first trial took place in October during the Vijayadashami festival. The line has also been inspected and given safety approval by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) after checking systems and passenger facilities.
Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro Network
With this launch, the total Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network will stretch about 68 kilometres with 54 stations. The overall aim is to provide faster, more affordable, and environmentally friendly transportation options for commuters in the region. Once fully operational, it should make daily travel much easier, especially for people living in about 20 sectors of Gandhinagar and nearby villages.
Local officials are now finalizing preparations for the inauguration, including station decorations, safety planning, and crowd management arrangements. They hope the new metro service will reduce people's dependence on private vehicles, lower traffic problems, and make city travel smoother.
