The Dwarka Expressway in New Delhi is about to introduce India's first "Free Flow Tolling" system, eliminating the need for physical toll plazas. This new technology will allow vehicles to pass through toll areas without stopping, making travel smoother and faster for everyone.

How It Works
The system will rely on advanced FASTag readers and high-powered cameras mounted on overhead gantries. These devices can read vehicle registration numbers and scan FASTags, even when vehicles are moving at speeds up to 100 km/h. As vehicles pass under these gantries, the toll will be automatically deducted from their FASTag accounts, without any need for drivers to stop or slow down.
No More Traffic Jams at Toll Plazas
One of the biggest benefits of this system is that it will reduce traffic pile-ups. With no need to stop at toll plazas, traffic will flow more smoothly, saving time for drivers and making the overall travel experience much more pleasant.
This initiative is part of the National Highways Authority of India's (NHAI) broader efforts to modernize toll collection and improve road travel. If successful, the Free Flow Tolling system could be expanded to other highways across the countryzBenefits of Free Flow Tolling
1. Reduced Traffic Congestion: The elimination of toll plazas means smoother traffic flow, reducing delays and bottlenecks.
2. Time Savings: Drivers will save time as they no longer have to wait in long queues at toll booths.
3. Lower Emissions: With fewer stops and starts, vehicles will consume less fuel, resulting in lower emissions and a reduced carbon footprint.
4. Enhanced Safety: Continuous traffic movement will reduce the risk of accidents near toll plazas, where sudden braking and lane changes are common.
5. Operational Efficiency: Automated toll collection will reduce the need for manual toll operations, leading to lower operational costs and fewer errors.
6. Convenience: Drivers can enjoy a seamless travel experience, without the hassle of stopping to pay tolls or carrying cash.
The Technology Behind Free Flow Tolling
The system, also known as Open Road Tolling (ORT), uses a combination of advanced technologies:
- Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR): Cameras on the gantries capture vehicle license plates and record the numbers as vehicles pass.
- RFID Transponders: Vehicles are equipped with FASTags, which communicate with the tolling system to process toll payments automatically.
- Overhead Gantries: These structures house the cameras and FASTag readers and are placed at strategic points to capture data from all passing vehicles.
- Backend Processing Systems: The data collected is sent to a central system that matches vehicle details with toll accounts and processes the payments.
This system will bring significant improvements to the way tolls are collected in India, ensuring a faster, more efficient, and safer experience for drivers on the Dwarka Expressway. If this pilot project succeeds, we may see similar systems on highways across the country, modernizing India's road network and making travel easier for everyone.
