New Delhi-Dehradun Expressway to Open in January; Now Reach Uttarakhand in Just 2.5 Hours

The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, led by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), is nearing completion and is expected to open in January 2025. This major infrastructure project is set to transform travel between Delhi and Dehradun, offering faster connectivity and boosting development along its route.

Details About the Expressway

The expressway spans approximately 210 kilometers, connecting Delhi with Dehradun and passing through Baghpat, Shamli, and Saharanpur. Designed as a six-lane highway, it can be expanded to eight lanes in the future. With a total investment of ₹13,000 crore, it is part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana, a government program to improve road infrastructure across India.

Features That Stand Out

The expressway will reduce the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from 6.5 hours to just 2.5 hours. A unique feature of the project is the 12-kilometer elevated wildlife corridor over the Rajaji National Park, protecting wildlife while ensuring smooth traffic flow. This will make it the second highway in India with such a corridor, following NH-44.

To enhance safety, the expressway will include trauma centers, ambulances, and fire brigades. Travelers will also benefit from facilities like bus bays, truck stops, and interchanges with recreational and refreshment areas. Greenery along the central divider and sturdy railings to prevent animals from wandering onto the road will make the journey safe and environmentally friendly.

Progress and Timeline

The project is being developed in phases. The first phase, from Akshardham to Khekra (EPE Junction), stretches 31.6 kilometers and includes an 18-kilometer elevated section. Built at a cost of ₹1,323 crore, this phase is nearly complete, with trials and finishing touches expected to conclude by December 2024.

Economic and Environmental Benefits

The expressway will significantly lower travel costs and reduce fuel consumption. This will not only save money for travelers but also bring environmental advantages. Regions like Loni, Ghaziabad, Sonia Vihar, and Karawal Nagar will enjoy improved connectivity, boosting local businesses and commerce.

For tourists heading to Uttarakhand, the expressway offers a smoother and quicker route. This is expected to attract more visitors to the state, helping to promote local tourism and economic growth.

The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is set to revolutionize travel and infrastructure in the region. With faster travel, reduced costs, and improved connectivity, this project is a step forward in India's development journey. Its inauguration in January 2025 will bring numerous benefits to travelers and local communities alike.
