Chennai is making history by hosting India's first-ever night street Formula 4 (F4) race as part of the Indian Racing Festival 2024. This exciting event is set to take place on August 31 and September 1, 2024, and will be held on a specially designed 3.5-kilometer street circuit around the iconic Island Grounds in Chennai.

Event Highlights
The race circuit will feature 19 turns and fast straights, offering a thrilling experience for both drivers and spectators. One of the most striking features of the circuit will be the Napier Bridge, which has been painted in a chequered flag design to enhance the racing atmosphere. The event is expected to attract around 9,000 spectators, who will witness this unique racing spectacle under the lights.
In addition to the main F4 race, the Indian Racing Festival will also include supporting events such as car stunts, "hot laps" by bike riders, and Round-2 of the JK Tyre-FMSCI Indian National Racing Championship. These events will add to the excitement and provide a full day of entertainment for motorsport enthusiasts.
Traffic Diversions and Road Closures
Due to the race, the Chennai Metropolitan Traffic Police have issued advisories on road closures and diversions that will be in effect from August 30 to September 1. Key locations in Chennai, such as Walaja Road, Annasalai, Kamarajar Road, and EVR Road, will experience significant traffic disruptions during this period.
Heavy and light commercial vehicles will be banned from noon to 10 PM at Munram, Muthuswamy Point, and Paris Corner. Additionally, Sivananda Salai and Kodimaram Road will be entirely closed, with no alternative routes for vehicles traveling from Kamaraj Road towards Santhome. Vehicles moving from Central Light towards Annasalai will be able to continue up to Pallavan Road Junction, where one lane has been temporarily converted into a two-way up to Periyar Salai.

Specific Route Changes
Vehicles heading towards the War Memorial on Kamaraj Road will be diverted near Labourer's Statue and should proceed via Walaja Road, Annasalai, Periyar Statue, and EVR Road. Those traveling towards Walaja Point on Annasalai will be redirected to Central Light Point on Pallavan Road.
The traffic police have also mandated that vehicles cannot travel from Muthuswamy Junction to Annasalai and Kodi Maarachala. Instead, they must use Pallavan Road, EVR Road, Central Railway Station, and Periyamedu Gandhi Irwin to reach their destinations.
This major event is expected to draw large crowds and necessitate extensive traffic measures to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the race. Residents and commuters are advised to plan their routes accordingly during these dates.
The Formula 4 race promises to be an exciting spectacle for motorsport fans while posing logistical challenges for daily commuters in Chennai. Following the traffic advisories will help minimize inconvenience during this high-profile event.
