The 218th Lalbagh Independence Day flower show in Bengaluru, from August 7 to 17, will honour Kittur Rani Chennamma and Sangolli Rayanna. These Karnataka freedom fighters' stories will be depicted through intricate floral displays inside the Glass House. The event is anticipated to attract 11 lakh visitors, surpassing the previous Republic Day show's attendance of 4.7 lakh.

Preparations for this grand event began over three months ago. The horticulture department has cultivated more than 6 lakh flowering plants on-site. Additionally, they have requested special plant varieties from nurseries in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Nandi Hills, and Ooty to enhance the display.

Floral Tribute to Freedom Fighters
"The theme this time is the valiant fight led by Chennamma and Rayanna in the 1820s. Their sacrifice and patriotism will be depicted entirely using flowers," stated M Jagadeesh, joint director of horticulture at Lalbagh. This theme aims to educate visitors about their resistance against British colonial rule.
The Lalbagh flower show occurs twice a year-in January and August-and ranks among Bengaluru's most popular cultural events. It draws tourists and flower enthusiasts from across India and abroad, making it a significant attraction in the city.
Potential Ban on Photo Sessions
The horticulture department is considering banning pre-wedding shoots, baby showers, and commercial photo or video shoots at Lalbagh. This proposal follows a similar restriction recently implemented at Cubbon Park. "Several commercial shoots disturb the peace of the garden and often damage plant life," said a senior Lalbagh horticulture official.
An expert panel led by environmentalist AN Yellappa Reddy has recommended prohibiting activities that could harm flora and fauna or cause overcrowding. "We are committed to maintaining Lalbagh's ecological balance," an official stated. The aim is to protect biodiversity while ensuring a quality experience for all visitors.
"The idea is to protect the biodiversity of the garden and ensure a quality experience for all visitors," added the official. The department may soon act on these recommendations to preserve Lalbagh's natural beauty throughout the year.
