Mumbai's ever-growing metro network is set for a major expansion starting April 8, 2026, bringing new routes, improved connectivity, and shorter travel times for daily commuters. With the addition of Metro Line 9 and Metro Line 2B (Phase 1), the city's transit map is becoming more integrated than ever before.

This latest rollout by MMRDA is not just about adding new tracks; it's about making everyday travel smoother, faster, and more connected across key regions.
What's New From April 8?
Two important corridors are opening up:
Metro Line 9 (Dahisar East to Kashigaon)
- This marks the first metro connectivity to Thane district, significantly easing travel for those commuting between Mumbai's western suburbs and Mira-Bhayander.
Metro Line 2B Phase 1 (Mandale to Diamond Garden, Chembur)
- For the first time, the Harbour Line belt gets metro access, improving connectivity in areas like Chembur.
Additionally, operational changes include:
- Lines 2A and 7 will now run as separate corridors
- Line 7 is extended and integrated with Line 9, creating a longer, uninterrupted travel route
A New Joint Corridor: Line 7 + Line 9
One of the biggest commuter advantages is the combined Line 7 and Line 9 corridor, running from Gundavali to Kashigaon.
- Total route length: 19.79 km
- Direct connectivity between Andheri East and Mira-Bhayander
- No interchange required, making travel seamless and time-saving
This eliminates the need for multiple switches, especially during peak hours.
Improved Timings & Frequency
The revised timetable focuses on commuter convenience:
- First trains: Around 5:50 AM - 6:00 AM
- Last trains: Between 10:30 PM - 11:00 PM
- Peak hour frequency: Every 6 minutes
- Non-peak frequency: Every 8-10 minutes
This ensures shorter waiting times and smoother crowd management, especially during rush hours.
Seamless Interchange At Dahisar
A major highlight is the easy interchange at Dahisar station, where passengers can switch between Line 2A and the 7/9 corridor without exiting the station.
This upgrade simplifies travel and enhances the overall commuter experience.
What This Means For Mumbai
This expansion is set to reshape daily commuting in Mumbai:
- Metro now reaches Thane district and Harbour Line regions
- Direct, long-distance connectivity across key suburban stretches
- Reduced dependency on road transport and local trains
- A more efficient, commuter-friendly urban transit system
Mumbai's metro story is clearly moving into its next phase; one that focuses on integration, accessibility, and speed. For daily commuters, April 8 isn't just another date; it marks a noticeable shift in how the city moves.
